English-medium instruction and pronunciation

Abstract:
Diese Dissertation geht der Frage nach, wie sich English-Medium Instruction (EMI) im Hochschulbereich auf die Aussprache der Studierenden auswirkt. Die Langzeitstudie, die hier präsentiert wird, wurde an der FH-Wien durchgeführt, wo eine von fünf Kohorten des BA-Studiengangs Unternehmensführung als bilinguale (deutsch/englisch) Variante angeboten wird. In diesem Programm werden bis zu 50% der Fachlehrveranstaltungen vorwiegend von Lektoren abgehalten, deren Muttersprache Englisch ist. Um mögliche Auswirkungen dieser extensiven Auseinandersetzung mit L1 Englisch zu untersuchen, wurden Tonaufnahmen einer Gruppe von Studierenden des bilingualen Programms und einer Gruppe des deutschen Programms zu Beginn (2011) und am Ende des Studiums (2014) angefertigt. Diese Aufnahmen wurden anschließend von Ausspracheexperten der Universität Wien hinsichtlich der Entwicklung des fremdsprachlichen Akzentes bewertet. Die Ergebnisse der diachronen und synchronen Analyse zeigen eindeutig, dass sich der fremdsprachliche Akzent in beiden Gruppen im Laufe des Studiums verringerte, wobei die bilinguale Gruppe signifikant besser abschnitt als die Kontrollgruppe. Bezüglich der Faktoren, die in der Literatur als relevant für den Erwerb der Aussprache angesehen werden, konnte keine einzelne Variable als hauptverantwortlich identifiziert werden. Viel mehr zeigte sich, dass mehrere miteinander verknüpfte Aspekte eine Rolle spielten. Des Weiteren ergab eine detaillierte Analyse des österreichischen Akzents, dass sich auf segmentaler Ebene einige stimmhafte Lenis-Konsonanten sowie Diphthonge am wenigsten veränderten. Suprasegmental gesehen stellten die Schwachtonform (weak form) und das Linking die größte Herausforderung dar. Diese Studie zeigt erstmals, dass sich EMI positiv auf die Entwicklung der Aussprache der Studierenden auswirken kann. ; This thesis addresses the question of how English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education affects adult learners’ pronunciation skills. The longitudinal case study presented here was conducted at the University of Applied Sciences Vienna, where one of five cohorts of the BA degree programme Entrepreneurship is offered in a bilingual (German/English) form. In this programme up to 50% of the content classes are held in English mostly by L1 speakers of the language. To investigate the potential impact of this increased exposure to L1 English on the learners' foreign accent, a group of students from the bilingual and a control group from the monolingual programme were recorded twice (in 2011 at the beginning of their studies and then again in 2014 at the end) reading a text and narrating a picture story. These sound files were subsequently rated by experienced pronunciation specialists. A close diachronic and synchronic analysis of the scores obtained revealed that although both groups managed to ameliorate the degree of foreign accent over time, the focus group distinctly outperformed the control group both from a cross-sectional as well as a longitudinal perspective. However, when exploring those variables that are frequently considered to be crucial in pronunciation learning, ‘exposure to the L1’ could not be identified as the only driving force for the changes observed. Rather, a number of inter-connected factors could be attributed to the development of the learners. In addition, a close investigation of the Austrian accent in English showed that a number of lenis consonants as well as diphthongs were found to be least susceptible to change over time. On the suprasegmental level, weak forms and linking seemed to be particularly challenging. This study is the first of its kind to present clear phonological gains to be obtained in English-medium instruction in higher education.
