Abstract: SCALES is the first UK population study of language development and disorder at school entry. Towards the end of this longitudinal study, the children (aged 12-13) were asked to write 500-word stories about the lives they would be leading at 25 years of age. This secondary analysis examines syntactic complexity in these future narratives to explore whether children with developmental language disorder show reduced complexity compared to their typically developing peers. The secondary analysis will also explore children's temporal perspective to see whether the two groups rely on different tenses (e.g. "I am 25 years old" vs. "I will be 25 years old"). ...
