Abstract: In this study we are interested in how children generalize from statements. Participants will be presented with statements about animals that have generic noun phrases ("Chameleons have sticky spit"), non-generic non-phrases ("This chameleon has sticky spit") or generic noun phrases that are qualified ("Chameleons, like the this one, have sticky spit"). Each statement will be accompanied by either a bland or rich image of the animal. People will be asked how many animals of the species mentioned in the statement will also have that property, and how many animals of a broader category level will also have that property. This design will allow us to examine how people combine visual and linguistic information to make sense of multimedia lessons. ...
