Abstract:
; This work deals with the reception of immigrant students in primary education, with particular emphasis on newly arrived immigrant students and especially in regards to the learning of the host language(s), its adaptation to the academic rhythm of the ordinary class and its social and affective integration. To this end, we begin by positioning ourselves within the framework of the inclusive school. Subsequently, we look at the bilingual situation and the research on linguistic immersion programmes. We have also carried out a review of the scientific literature about the linguistic and academic gap between native and immigrant students, noting that native students obtain, in almost all cases, scores greater than immigrant students. We try to answer the question regarding the period necessary for immigrant students to achieve the level of linguistic competence in the language(s) of the school in order to follow an itinerary of academic success therein. We also analyse the role played by the home language, the language of the family, in the achievement of school success and social integration. Later we present the comparative empirical research that we undertook in Catalonia, the Basque Country and France, with a sample of just over 50 teachers in each of these territories. Regarding the negative aspects relating to students in the host classroom, we must emphasize the difficulties in achieving the level of linguistic competence in the host language(s), the abandonment of the language and culture of origin, the limitations to achieving the academic level of the group in the ordinary class, and the obstacles to good integration. Emphasising the positive side, notable is the personal help provided for newly arrived students in order to overcome anguish and initial stress. The conclusions of our article give rise to some basic proposals for the elaboration of education programmes with immigrant students, especially regarding the learning of the school language(s) and the home language, academic achievement and the social and affective integration of the students. ; Peer Reviewed
