Abstract: International audience ; Formant values of oral vowels are automatically measured in a total of 50000 segments from four hours of spontaneous broadcast speech in French and German. After the automatic segmentation using the LIMSI automatic speech alignment system., formant values are extracted for the oral vowel segments using the PRAAT software. Vowels with unlikely formant values are discarded (4%). The measured values are discussed with respect to three parameters: speaker sex, segment duration and language. For 60% of the vowels the measured formant values are within a 200Hz range of established reference formant values. The gap between the measured mean Fi values and the reference values is inversely proportional to vowel duration. A tendency of vowel centralization clearly emerges for both languages.
