Abstract:
We examine several phonological and phonetic properties of the "centralizing" short diphthongs found in several varieties of English spoken in Britain and North America. On the basis of a study of 4 subjects speaking General American English (GAE), it is proposed that centralizing diphthongization is an intrinsic property of certain short vowels, involving a lag in the production of the feature [ tense] (lenis, lax). Although playing no role in the phonology of modern English, this feature serves at the phonetic level to enhance the distinction between short and long vowels, the latter (especially the mid vowels) being generally realized as "centrifugal" syllabic nuclei produced with a movement towards the periphery of the vowel space, where they acquire values corresponding to the feature [+tense].
