Abstract:
; Scientific research rarely focuses on the process of data collection, specifically regarding migrant surveys. Yet, migrants are considered to be difficult to survey. This paper deals with the two questions (1) whether the participation rate among migrants can be increased if the interviewers are bilingual and belong to the same ethnic group, and (2) how interviewer characteristics affect sample selectivity and response behaviour, respectively. This research is based on a study of the pairfam project. Together with the first wave of the new German family panel, a survey on Turkish young adults was conducted, using the same questionnaire (N=429). The interviewers were either bilingual Turkish-German speaking or only German-speaking. All had translated questionnaires at hand. Findings show a significantly higher participation rate in the case of bilingual interviewers. These differences persist in multivariate regression models. However, the people interviewed by the two groups of interviewers hardly differ with regard to socio-demographic or sociostructural characteristics or family attitudes. Bilingual interviewers seem to be hardly more successful in reaching less integrated migrants. In terms of response behaviour this pattern is in line with existing evidence according to which interviewer characteristics show an impact in related topics only.
