Student motivation associated with applied learning in biology classroom using case studies
Abstract:
This study is based on the work previously conducted by Glynn, Taasoobshirazi, & Brickman (2009) and Glynn, Brickman, Armstrong, & Taasoobshirazi (2011). This study modified the Science Motivation Questionnaire to focus on biology. The traditional lecture style was replaced with a case study based curriculum. The Biology Motivation Questionnaire was given as a pre- and post-test instrument. Student interviews were also given. The modification of the testing instrument was tested for reliability, and the pre- and post-test items were compared using matched pairs analysis. Analysis of the belief of case studies applying to the real world was also conducted. This study found that student motivation did not change over the course of the semester. This study also found that after a case study based curriculum class, students believe that case studies apply the material that is learned to the real world. ; MA ; Mathematics and Science Education ; Science Education ; David Jackson ; David Jackson ; Marguerite Brickman ; Seri Beall
