Diese SprachmittlerInnen sind zweisprachig, kommen oft aus dem MigrantInnenmilieu und unterstützen ihre Familien oder Freunde bei der Bewältigung des Alltags. Das natürliche Dolmetschen führt jedoch noch immer ein Randdasein in der dolmetschwissenschaftlichen Forschung. Die wenigen empirischen Studien zu diesem Thema stellen den SprachmittlerInnen kein gutes Zeugnis aus. Missverständnisse und fehlendes Rollenbewusstsein sind eher die Regel als die Ausnahme. Es existieren aber auch Beispiele, die die Arbeit mit LaiendolmetscherInnen positiv beurteilen. Dies zeigt sich vor allem im Sport- oder Kirchenbereich, in Gefangenenhäusern und anderen Berufssparten, die anlässlich der ersten Konferenz über nicht-professionelles Dolmetschen in Forlí, Italien, im Mai 2012 vorgestellt wurden. Der empirische Teil dieses Forschungsprojekts analysiert ein gelungenes Beispiel nicht-professioneller Dolmetschung und zeigt auf, dass SprachmittlerInnen unter bestimmten Umständen genauso gut dolmetschen können wie Profis. ; This thesis discusses translations by non-academic, non-professional translators who are commonly referred to as lay translators, natural translators, and language mediators. Professional, academic interpreters provide smooth communication among parties at conferences, in business, and for administrational purposes. In addition, non-professional language mediators translate among people from different language and cultural backgrounds. Most of these lay translators are migrants who grew up bilingually. Typically, they support family and friends in their daily affairs. Natural translation is still widely neglected in academic research. The few existing academic studies evaluate non-professional language mediation very critically. They document many cases of miscommunication or translators lacking awareness of his/her role. Still, there are some examples of positive assessments of non-professional translations as discussed at the conference on non-professional translation in Forli, Italy, in Mai 2012. These examples include translations in prisons, for churches, and in sports. The empirical part of this thesis examines one example of effective non-professional language mediation.
