Articles have long been regarded as the most prominent instantiation of the D-head. Since Croatian does not have definite and indefinite articles, the principal question is whether articleless nominal expressions project a DP on top of NP, and, if so, which elements qualify as possible D-heads. In order to elaborate on this issue, I critically question some of the arguments provided in support of the NP approach and examine certain syntactic structures and patterns that provide clues to the syntactic make-up of Croatian nominal expressions. In concrete terms, I reconsider the syntactic status of all prenominal elements (adjectives vs. determiners), including their external merge position, and discuss their prenominal neutral word order. I consider the optionality-status of demonstrative pronouns, along with other (in)definiteness markers, and deal with the question how and to what extent they contribute to the (in)definite interpretation of Croatian noun phrases. I also examine adjectival premodification in coordinated NP-structures, structural alternations in genitive constructions and the internal structure of argument-supporting nominalizations (ASNs). Their discussion provides a more in-depth insight into the syntactic structure of Croatian nominal expressions and shows that these constructions cannot be explained either by the NP-analysis or the proposed DP-analyses of Slavic noun phrases, according to which all prenominal elements are treated as adjectival modifiers that are either adjoined to NP (NP approach) or occupy specifier positions of their dedicated functional projections (DP approach). Following the idea that the interpretation of nouns is conceptually equal across languages, irrespective of the presence or absence of certain morpho-syntactic markers (in this case articles), I adopt a split DP-structure for Croatian nouns and provide their analysis in terms of a split DP. The splitting of the nominal left periphery into various functional projections, such as DefP, FocP or TopP, allows me to explain various syntactic phenomena within the Croatian noun phrase. ; Diese Dissertation untersucht die interne Struktur der kroatischen Nominalausdrücke. Bekanntermaßen wird in Sprachen, welche indefinite und definite Artikel haben, eine Determiniererphrase (DP) projiziert. Der Kopf dieser Phrase wird vorwiegend durch definite und indefinite Artikel besetzt. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass das Kroatische keine Artikel hat, stellt sich hiermit berechtigterweise die Frage, ob die Nominalphrase im Kroatischen ebenfalls eine DP oberhalb der NP projiziert und, falls ja, welche Elemente als potentielle D-Köpfe in Frage kommen. Um diese Frage zu beantworten, werden einige der wichtigsten Argumente, welche für eine NP-Analyse der Nomina im Kroatischen sprechen, kritisch hinterfragt. Darüber hinaus werden bestimmte syntaktische Konstruktionen untersucht, die entscheidende Hinweise zur internen syntaktischen Beschaffenheit nominaler Ausdrücke im Kroatischen liefern. Im konkreten Fall beinhaltet dies eine komparative Gegenüberstellung morphologischer und syntaktischer Eigenschaften englischer und kroatischer Nomina sowie eine Beschreibung der pränominalen Wortstellung innerhalb der kroatischen Nominalphrase. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die neutrale Anordnung pränominaler Elemente und deren zulässige Kombinationen gelegt. Auf Grund der Tatsache, dass Demonstrativpronomina einerseits als potentieller Ersatz für definite Artikel betrachtet werden, andererseits aber fakultativ sind, untersuche ich ihre Optionalität innerhalb der kroatischen Nominalphrase und gehe der Frage nach, inwiefern sie, zusammen mit anderen (In)Definitheitsmarkern, zur (in)definiten Interpretation der Nomina beitragen. Zusätzlich werden folgende syntaktische Phänomene im Kroatischen analysiert: Modifizierung koordinierter Nominalphrasen durch pränominale Adjektive, strukturelle Konstitutentenalternation in Genitivkonstruktionen sowie die interne Struktur der Nominalisierungen, welche sich durch eine Argumentstruktur auszeichnen. Meine Analyse bietet einen tiefergehenden Einblick in die syntaktische Struktur der kroatischen Nominalphrase und zeigt, dass die oben angeführten Konstruktionen weder mit Hilfe der NP-Analyse noch mit der bisher vorgeschlagenen DP-Analyse erklärt werden können, weil diese von einer einheitlichen Behandlung aller pränominalen Elemente ausgehen, nach welcher diese entweder als Adjektive (phrasale Adjunkte) an die NP angefügt werden (NP-Analyse) oder sich in der Spezifikatorposition der jeweiligen funktionalen Projektion oberhalb der NP befinden (DP-Analyse). Basierend auf der Annahme, dass die Interpretation der Nomina unabhängig von der An- bzw. Abwesenheit bestimmter morphosyntaktischer Kategorien (in diesem Falle Artikel) sprachübergreifend konzeptuell identisch ist, nehme ich die DP-Hypothese für das Kroatische an und erarbeite die syntaktische Struktur der kroatischen Nominalphrase im Rahmen einer theoretischen Weiterentwicklung der DP-Hypothese: der Split-DP-Hypothese. Eine Dekomposition der nominalen linken Peripherie in funktionale Projektionen DefP, FocP, oder TopP, erlaubt eine adäquate Erklärung unterschiedlicher syntaktischer Phänomene innerhalb der kroatischen Nominalphrase.
