You’re a bitch, the stallion said: estudio contrastivo inglés-español sobre el uso sexista del lenguaje.
; Several studies have shown that the ways in which linguistic sexism can be expressed in both English and Spanish are manyfold. This paper focuses mainly on the semantic derogation procedure as one of them, especially in its presence within the animal metaphor. In both languages it is common to find metaphors that represent women as vixens, bitches or cows and men as bulls, foxes or stallions. It is not a coincidence that most of the feminine forms have a pejorative meaning while the masculine forms have generally positive nuances; rather, it is a reflection of the role given to both genders in our society and it is related to traditional values. The animal metaphor is thus an ideal vehicle for spreading and perpetuating certain stereotypes, making evident the tendency to represent women as inferior and subordinated to men. ; Universidad de Granada.
