Inaugurant un dialogue entre ethnologie, anthropologie, philosophie, sciences politiques, sémiologie, les contributions s'accordent sur l'apport majeur de Pierre Clastres à la compréhension de formations sociales contre-étatiques mais aussi à l'étude des configurations des rapports et technologies de pouvoir dans les sociétés capitalistes contemporaines. À la manière d'un hommage, les auteurs se proposent d'actualiser ses hypothèses, se livrent à des reprises conceptuelles dans une optique commune : Approfondir les perspectives ouvertes par Clastres. PIERRE CLASTRES (1934-1977) rencontre dès ses premiers terrains au Paraguay, dans de petites communautés amérindiennes, une forme du vivre humain radicalement différente. Chaque aspect de la vie collective du groupe participe à maintenir à distance les risques de domination d’une partie du groupe sur les autres, à refuser la possibilité de l’unification socio-politique. Le chef n’y a pas de pouvoir de commandement, la guerre y est pratiquée avec ferveur. Clastres n’y perçoit non pas une absence de pouvoir mais bien au contraire un refus permanent de la potentialité d’un pouvoir coercitif : l’État s’y présente comme virtualité continuellement conjurée. Dans ces sociétés contre l’État, « le maître mot de l’amitié de tous avec tous [est] “Nous sommes tous pareils !” » (Clastres, 1977). Il consacra ses études à la compréhension du mode de vie contre-étatique, à formuler anthropologiquement des fragments de réponses aux préoccupations de la philosophie politique. En documentant la manière dont ces communautés ont su « maintenir au cœur secret de la forêt leur furtive et timide existence de nomades » (Clastres 1974), Clastres n’invite pas à contrefaire le mode de vie primitif mais à développer une pratique de l’anthropologie comme politique, à décentrer la raison occidentale et découvrir une pensée nouvelle permettant de dessiner des possibilités de vie.
