Mythmaking and storytelling: The monologue in contemporary American drama.
Abstract: Although the monologue has survived as a dramatic device since the time of Greek and Roman theater, relatively little attention has been devoted to its effect on dramatic narrative. Contemporary American playwrights extend and redefine the tradition of the monologue; drawing upon the experimental theater movements of the past two decades and sometimes imitating the fluidity of film, they invite us to establish a new theoretical context for discussing the kinds of storytelling that their monologues create. This dissertation argues that monologue transforms the stage space in a play into narrative space. Because of the monologue's ability to maneuver time and place, the process of telling has the power to subsume onstage activity and to become dramatic action. The focus of a performance, then, is not merely the narrative being relayed, but the act of monologue-speaking as well. Chapter One describes the mechanisms whereby these narrative transformations occur, and sets the boundaries of the monologue in an historical context through a discussion of its function in the works of such major dramatists as Shakespeare, Shaw, Brecht, and Beckett. The second chapter examines the role of monologue in the plays of earlier American dramatists (O'Neill, Williams, Miller, Albee) and in experimental movements such as the Open Theater. Chapter Three discusses monological speech in Sam Shepard's plays: his emphasis on its metatheatrical qualities in his early works, his excursions into popular culture in search of a new storytelling language, and his creation of a mythological narrative that transcends the realism of the traditional family play. The fourth chapter treats David Mamet's use of the monologue; storytelling, ritualized in his early plays, becomes a metaphor for the types of con games enacted by his characters. Mamet unmasks the fraud involved in the monologues of his various salesmen, yet suggests that they are quintessential performers in the larger con game of the theater itself. Finally, through a discussion of the works of Maria Irene Fornes and Ntozake Shange, Chapter Five shows that monologue also serves as a means for the creation and assertion of a female identity as conveyed by the performative voice. ; Ph.D. ; American literature ; Communication and the Arts ; Language, Literature and Linguistics ; Theater ; University of Michigan, Horace H.
