: THE FONEME [L] IN THE BASHKIR LANGUAGE: EXPERIMENTAL DATA, HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT ...

: This article presents the results of experimental-phonetic research on the phoneme [l] of the Bashkir language, as well as analysis of its genesis. The experimental material obtained by the method of magnetic resonance imaging showed a difference from the theoretical conclusions given in the «Grammar of the Modern Bashkir Literary Language» (1981) regarding the articulatory-acoustic characteristics of this phoneme. According to modern instrumental data, it was determined that the phoneme [l] of the Bashkir language is a sonorant anterior lingual dental alveolar occlusive-constrictive (or lateral) voiced consonant. The language uses two of its basic allophones: velarized in solid wordforms and palatalized in soft ones. When the palatalized variant is articulated, the body of the tongue is located in the anterior part of the oral cavity indicating that it is ahead of the velarized allophone. The phoneme [l] in the Bashkir language functions in three positions of the word (anlaut, inlaut, auslaut), as well as ...
