Ambiguity in the mental lexicon ...
Trott, Sean. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: There are a number of theories characterizing how ambiguous words are represented in the mental lexicon. Most of these theories implicitly assume the cognitive reality of word senses in the first place––i.e., that there exists a “boundary” between distinct meanings (whether polysemous or homonymous) of the same wordform, and that this boundary exerts an influence on psychological processing above and beyond the context-dependent nature of word meaning. If we assume that words do have distinct, discrete senses, a further question arises of whether those senses are arranged differently as a function of the kind of ambiguity at play. That is, are distinct word senses represented differently according to whether they are related (polysemy) or unrelated (homonymy)? What are the consequences of lexical ambiguity for the structure of the mental lexicon? ...
