Los métodos de enseñanza de español publicados en Massachusetts (Estados Unidos) en el siglo XIX

Abstract:
The 19th Century entailed the rise of language teaching in the United States of America. After the nation had born barely a century ago, many linguists, politicians, merchants and teachers saw a niche market of Spanish teaching to those Americans of Anglo-Saxon or Germanic heritage, originating from Europe, and to their descendants. Spanish was especially relevant in the country due to their presence in North America since the 16th Century, and to its category of dominant or official language in most of the countries of Central and South America. Therefore, the most important places of universities and publishing houses, such as Boston and Cambridge in Massachusetts, witnessed the fervent publishing activity of authors who distributed many texts to the teaching of the Spanish language: bilingual vocabularies, grammars, dictionaries and manuals. The Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española, which constitutes the basis of this work, not only has allowed us to reunite the publications of Spanish language teaching in Massachusetts, but also has permitted us to reconstruct many of the lives of its authors, which sometimes had been unnoticed to the history. ; El siglo XIX supuso el auge de la enseñanza de idiomas en los Estados Unidos. Con la nación configurada apenas un siglo atrás, fueron muchos lingüistas, políticos, comerciantes y profesores que vieron un nicho de mercado en la enseñanza de español a los estadounidenses de origen anglosajón y germano, procedentes de Europa, y a sus descendientes. El español era una lengua especialmente importante en el país debido a su presencia en Norteamérica desde el siglo xvi y a su categoría de lengua dominante y oficial en la mayoría de los países de Centroamérica y Sudamérica. Así, centros neurálgicos de universidades y de editoriales, como Boston y Cambridge en Massachusetts, fueron testigos de la ferviente actividad editorial de autores que se lanzaron a la publicación de no pocos textos de enseñanza de español, entre los que encontramos vocabularios bilingües, gramáticas, diccionarios y manuales. La Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española, que constituye el punto de partida de este trabajo, nos ha permitido reunir no solo las publicaciones de obras de enseñanza de español de Massachusetts, sino también reconstruir muchas de las vidas de sus autores, que en ocasiones habían pasado casi desapercibidos para la historia.
