Abstract: International audience ; À partir de l'étude de cas des doubles modaux (DMs) dans les dialectes contemporains de l'anglais américain (AE) et britannique (BrE), cet article présente les avantages possibles d'une triangulation méthodologique en dialectologie, en particulier dans l'étude de la variation syntaxique rare et restreinte en termes de formes et de distribution géographique, qui pose un certain nombre de défis empiriques en linguistique. La première section décrit brièvement le fait de langue en question et les analyses synchroniques qui en sont proposées dans la littérature, ainsi que quelques résultats d'une étude pilote de terrain menée en Écosse. La section suivante énonce le projet d'une approche convergente en deux temps : tout d'abord une étude sur corpus de communication virtuelle, fournissant ensuite les bases d'un protocole expérimental de terrain de type psycholinguistique. De manière générale, les nouvelles ressources du linguiste contemporain ouvrent des possibilités importantes dans l'étude des variantes, dont les variantes syntaxiques, en sociolinguistique générale.
