Our object of study is the Newcomer's Guide to Edmonton (NGE), a handbook created by the City of Edmonton to assist recent immigrants. Our research addresses challenges faced by several constituencies: a) municipal government personnel who commissioned a translation of official city documents but may not have a full understanding of the cultural and linguistic complexities involved in translation; b) community translators who provide materials for linguistically diverse communities yet often lack appropriate tools or formal training; c) newcomers to the city who, due to limited English, often struggle with access to information. The research partnership has a three-fold goal: 1) to document, analyze, and enhance existing translation policies implemented by the City of Edmonton; 2) to empower the public sector and community translators to develop policies and shared best practices for community translation; 3) to redefine the intercultural and social role of community translation.
