Abstract:

Cleft constructions and focus strategies in Modern Armenian, Faits de Langues, 52(1), 89-116. doi:10.1163/19589514-05201005 ; International audience ; Cleft constructions are one of the possible focus strategies available in Modern Armenian alongside prosody and specific syntactic constructions. Cleft constructions in Modern Armenian are biclausal constructions with a matrix clause and a relative-like clause, with an identificational clause as a matrix clause headed by a copula (in present or past), while in the relative-like clause introduced by the main subordinator, the relativized argument is coindexed with the argument of the copula. Though typologically cleft constructions are considered typical of languages with rigid word order, they are common in Modern Armenian, a language with flexible word order. It is argued that the intensity of focalization depends on the strategy used, with simple prosody marking associated with the lowest level of intensity, and preverbal position and clefts associated with intermediate and high-intensity focalization respectively. The corpus-based data show an unequal distribution of clefted pronouns as predicate clefts (impersonal with no agreement) and subject clefts (copular verb coindexed with personal pronouns as a subject) depending on the person and the polarity. The existence of cleft-like constructions in Classical Armenian and both Modern Armenian standards is argued to be evidence of diachronic continuity and a possible grammaticalization path from cleft constructions to the auxiliary movement focus strategy. ; Les constructions clivées sont, avec la prosodie et les constructions syntaxiques dédiées, une des stratégies de focalisation disponibles en arménien moderne. Ces constructions bi-phrastiques sont, comme en français ou en anglais, constituées d'une proposition principale à copule présente ou passée, et d'une subordonnée pseudorelative introduite par un complémenteur, et dont l'argument relativisé est co-indexé avec l'argument de la copule. Alors que typologiquement, les clivées sont associées aux langues à l'ordre des mots rigide, elles sont pourtant courantes en arménien moderne, langue à ordre flexible disposant d'autres stratégies de focalisation. L'analyse proposée ici est que les différentes stratégies disponibles en arménien correspondent à différents degrés de focalisation, le marquage purement prosodique représentant le degré le plus faible, alors que le focus par déplacement pré-verbal et les constructions clivées représentent un degré plus intense de focalisation. Les données de corpus analysées pour cette étude montrent que la répartition entre pronoms clivés prédicatifs (impersonnels sans accord) et clivées sujet (copule co-indexée au pronom personnel) varie en fonction de la personne du pronom et de la polarité de la copule. Nous proposons de considérer l'existence de pseudo-clivées tant en arménien classique que dans les deux standards modernes comme l'indice d'une continuité diachronique suggérant un chemin de grammaticalisation entre les constructions clivées et la stratégie de focalisation par mouvement de l'auxiliaire, caractéristique de l'arménien oriental moderne.
