Picturing the revolution in Grenada: trauma, censorship, liberation ; Peindre la révolution à la Grenade : trauma(s), censure(s), libération(s)
In: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/medihal-01819088 ; 2017 (2017)
Abstract: This presentation aims at showing that traumatic memory has bequeathed a legacy of self-censorship in some regions of the Caribbean subjected to domination. Under such circumstances, the repressed desire for freedom can only find its way under the guise of aesthetic artifacts. The case study that we will examine to defend this thesis is the historical record of the collective trauma which occurred thirty-five years ago in Grenada. In retrospect, the Grenadian coup d'etat of 1983 has had a peculiar echo in the history of the Caribbean. A political leader named Maurice Bishop gave his life for the sake of the humanist ideals he defended under the banner of the socialist revolution. The "Revo", as it came to be called, was short-lived, though. Indeed, Bishop fell victim to the ideological counter-currents which vied for predominance on the geopolitical scene during the Reagan years. His assassination left a resilient yet orphaned people haunted by the loss of all improvement prospects. The recollection of that traumatic event has not even been given the chance of impregnating the collective unconscious since the remains of the national hero were totally destroyed. As a result of this censorship, an aborted mourning was all that was left to the artists who endeavored to transmit to the following generations an artistic representation of their own traumatic memories.
