Abstract: Sorry, the full text of this article is not available in Huskie Commons. Please click on the alternative location to access it. ; 113 p. ; An inductive case study design was utilized in order to provide one answer to the research question: How can braille and English as a second language best be taught concurrently to an adventitiously blind adult non-native English speaker? The principal subject was an adventitiously blind Somali refugee living in a city in the midwestern United States. The subject is currently being served by professionals from the blindness rehabilitation system and from the English as a second language (ESL) adult education system such that he is being concurrently taught braille and English as a second language. Thus, a close examination of his case revealed positive and negative factors impacting his learning processes pertinent to the research question. Suggestions of ways that the positive factors can be replicated and maximized were crafted together into a recommended integrated-services model that is practical for application in settings other than large urban areas where specialized services may be available. The study was comprised of three phases. In the first phase, background information was gathered to contextualize the case and to sensitize the researcher to pertinent cultural issues. Relevant literature was reviewed to examine the relationship between adult education and disability rehabilitation; to define braille literacy; to explore historical and current thinking in second language literacy instruction; and to gain insight into the subject's culture. religion, and native language. In the second phase, extensive fieldwork was employed to gather data from a wide variety of sources concerning the subject's experiences in learning braille and ESL concurrently. In the third phase, these data were compiled and analyzed utilizing selected qualitative research design techniques and procedures. Emergent themes from the case study were interpreted in conjunction with those arising from the primary literature. Together, these are reported as lists of factors affecting successful concurrent braille and ESL learning. In the final stages of the third phase of the study, implications were drawn from these findings in the form of a theoretical integrated-services model that may be applied in concurrently teaching braille and ESL to the rapidly-rising population of learners having these dual needs.
