Sense et feeling : l'expérience du sentiment ...

Abstract:
... : In contemporary English, the substantives sense and feeling seem to be synonymous when they refer to feelings. However, the kind of context in which they occur suggest that they convey different visions of those feelings. This paper aims to account for the meaning of the two lexical items in a perspective that gives the lexicon its embodied, experienced dimension. This contribution is based on the study of the collocations formed by sense and feeling in structures such as sense /feeling of + substantive on the one hand, and verb + a sense /feeling of on the other hand. Although feeling and sense appear to be semantic equivalents, they are connected with two different visions of feelings: the former highlights the conventional and social dimension of experience, while the latter is a reflexion of the individual, embodied dimension of experience. ...
