Abstract:
Entrada de blog ; El “repertorio lingüístico”, ¿qué es?A raíz de sus trabajos en contextos multilingües en la India en los años sesenta, el lingüista norteamericano John Gumperz propuso el concepto de “repertorio lingüístico” (ingl. “verbal repertoire”) para designar la totalidad de las formas lingüísticas empleadas dentro de una comunidad en el curso de una interacción socialmente significativa.¿Por qué ha llamado tanto la atención de los estudiosos esta propuesta conceptual? Muchos estudiosos –principalmente en el campo de la lingüística etnográfica y de la sociolingüística del multilingüismo– la han sido utilizado porque hace hincapié en que cada hablante tiene un repertorio propio, que viene construyendo a lo largo de su vida y del que va extrayendo elementos útiles o relevantes según las distintas situaciones comunicativas a las que se enfrenta.Las interpretaciones acerca de lo que recubren estos repertorios o recursos lingüísticos han sido muy distintas según los autores que han retomado este concepto. Algunos entienden el concepto de “repertorio” como un conjunto de lenguas distintas que el hablante ha adquirido bajo varias modalidades de aprendizaje y para las cuales posee distintos niveles de competencia, para otros es el manejo de distintas variedades (diatópicas, diafásicas, diastráticas o diacrónicas) en el seno de una misma lengua. Pero a fin de cuentas, lo que sí podemos afirmar es que cuanto más extenso sea el repertorio de un individuo, más capaz será de adaptarse a una multiplicidad de situaciones comunicativas diferentes, en una o más lenguas. La contrapartida es que todo repertorio es individual, dinámico, cambiante y necesariamente incompleto y fragmentado. Porque, claro, por muy “hablante nativo” o “hablante ideal” que sea uno, ¡nunca puede llegar a manejar todo lo que potencialmente recubre una “lengua”! Nadie conoce –ni llega a emplear–, todos los recursos fónicos, morfológicos, sintácticos, lexicales, ni tampoco todos los registros o las variedades de una misma “lengua”. Esto lo explican muy bien Anna Babel y Devin Grammon en este mismo blog.El repertorio constituye pues una herramienta muy útil a la hora de estudiar situaciones plurilingües o de “contacto de lenguas”, aunque sea para recordar que antes de haber lenguas, hay sobre todo hablantes, con trayectorias y competencias propias y únicas en ecologías lingüísticas específicas.
