Abstract:
For centuries, French culture had been held in high regard among Russian society and many Russian writers had travelled to France and written about the country. The resulting body of works focuses the attention of scholars both Russians and foreign. However, Soviet travel writings about France make for an under-investigated area of study, despite their relevance to the fields of literature and history. Monitoring bodies supervised Soviet writers’ stays in Paris – and later in other French cities – from the early beginnings of travel planning and through every step. The travelers’ accounts were bound to adhere to the norms of Soviet realism and revised by censors. Throughout the Soviet era, the rules were frequently amended, and travel writings evolved along them. Indeed, they were reflective of the current political climate, bore witness to tragic events and chronicled the state of Franco-Russian diplomatic relations. Soviet writers constantly invoked the notion of « friendship » between the people of both nations, indicating a wish for a continued privileged and exclusive rapport. But even though the genre of Soviet travel writings was conscientiously aligned with Sate propaganda, it also drew from older criteria and images to be found in descriptions of France in Russian and French literature. ; Durant des siècles, une place particulière est réservée à la culture française dans la société russe et de nombreux écrivains voyagent en France et rédigent des textes sur le pays. Leurs ouvrages sont abondamment étudiés par des chercheurs russes et étrangers. En revanche, le récit de voyage soviétique sur la France est un domaine peu investigué, et pourtant, il présente un intérêt littéraire et historique. Les séjours des écrivains soviétiques à Paris puis dans les différentes villes de la France étaient longuement préparés et dûment suivis par les instances de contrôle. Le texte rédigé à l’issue du voyage devait correspondre aux normes du réalisme socialiste et était relu et corrigé par des censeurs. Les règles sont revues tout au long de la période soviétique et le récit de voyage subit aussi des transformations. De fait, il s’imprègne de la politique du moment, témoigne des événements tragiques et rend compte des relations diplomatiques entre la France et l’URSS. Le rappel intarissable de la notion d’« amitié » entre les peuples traduit la volonté des Soviétiques de préserver des rapports exclusifs. Néanmoins, et cela malgré son aspect fidèle à la propagande d’État, le récit de voyage soviétique hérite des critères et emprunte des images déjà utilisées pour décrire la France dans la littérature russe et française.
