通訳翻訳学の諸問題と大学院通訳翻訳学プログラムが目指すこと ; Aims and Challenges of an MA Program in Translation Studies
菊地 敦子; Kikuchi Atsuko. - : 関西大学外国語学部, 2019
Abstract: People tend to think that translation or interpreting can be done by anyone who speaks two languages. There is still a lack of understanding in terms of what a translator / interpreter does, the skills that are required and the issues that are discussed amongst scholars of translation studies. This situation is similar to how people in the past used to think that anyone who speaks English can teach English. Nowadays, people realize that it takes more than being able to use English to teach the language, and they enroll in MA programs in TESOL to learn the theories of teaching. The field of translation studies has not yet reached this stage. In order to educate students on what a translator or an interpreter's job entails, it is necessary to invite professional translators and interpreters currently working in the field to explain how to develop skills required in their respective fields. As a graduate school, however, we are also responsible for training scholars of translation studies, so we must also provide classes where students can familiarize themselves with the theories of translation and interpreting. The need to introduce the practical aspect of translation / interpreting as well as the theoretical aspect of translation creates a challenge to designing a good MA program in translation studies.
