Celebration and Support: Faculty Writers in Community -- #sunycow2021
Abstract: These are the slides for a session at the 2021 SUNY Council on Writing Virtual Conference: Scarcity and Abundance: Cultivating Community Expertise in Uncertain Times. SESSION DESCRIPTION/PROPOSAL: When coaching, mentoring, and grading students on writing, instructors’ own complicated relationships with writing can have an impact. We have seen instructors who deal with shame around past feedback on their writing, imposter syndrome around being qualified to teach about writing, and fear about publishing, all of which may work to suppress their voices and impact their teaching, particularly for non-tenure-track faculty and adjuncts of color. At Columbia University’s School of Social Work (CSSW), the two departments we lead have created inexpensive faculty development programming to celebrate writing, create community, and offer support around relationships with writing: the Writing Center created a series of virtual panels on our faculty’s lives as writers (Writing Lives), and the Online Campus created a series of short presentations at regular online faculty meetings on Demystifying Publishing. Despite our colleagues’ dearth of time during the pandemic, and abundance of inequitable difficulty and disruption, we found connection through common experiences of writing. In the Writing Lives series, faculty from across CSSW’s curriculum come together on virtual panels to share how they perceive writing in their lives, major challenges they have faced in writing, and strategies they have used to find success. Themes have included the use of narrative in social work practice, and writing for social justice. In the Demystifying Publishing presentations, panelists share details about the process of getting one specific article published in an academic or public venue, including the writing timeline, any rejections and resubmissions, and interactions with the editor. These short, concrete presentations shine light into a process that many find mysterious and intimidating. In this interactive workshop, we propose to engage participants in considering faculty relationships with writing and the impact on their students, share details of our two programs, and discuss how participants might support their own faculty in disciplines.
