Abstract:
International audience ; Emojis; these small non-verbal digital pictograms—have thrived with the development of social networks. Their use, which falls within the context of globalization of cultures and the individualization of references, is linked to international and local dynamics as well as individual choices. The present contribution focuses on emojis as a situated phenomenon. Anchored in the field of sociolinguistics, it draws on contributions from the intercultural approach. Its originality lies in the comparisons made on the use of emojis in three countries: France, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. The study is synchronic and is based mainly on a questionnaire proposed in three languages. More than one hundred questionnaires were submitted to the three countries. The results obtained enable us to reflect, among other things, on the functions of emojis, on the question of their possible "universality" and on the misunderstandings that their use could generate. ; Les émojis, ces petits pictogrammes numériques qui relèvent du nonverbal, ont pris leur essor avec le développement des réseaux sociaux. Leur utilisation, qui s'inscrit dans un contexte de mondialisation des cultures et d'individualisation des références, est liée à des dynamiques internationales, locales et à des choix individuels. La présente contribution s'intéresse aux émojis en tant que phénomène situé. Ancrée dans le champ de la sociolinguistique, elle s'appuie sur les apports de l'approche interculturelle. Son originalité réside dans la comparaison de l'utilisation des émojis dans trois pays : la France, l'Italie et l'Arabie saoudite. L'étude est synchronique et s'appuie principalement sur un questionnaire proposé dans trois langues. Plus de cent questionnaires au total ont été soumis sur les trois pays. Les résultats obtenus permettent de réfléchir entre autres aux fonctions des émojis, à la question de leur éventuelle « universalité » et aux malentendus que leur utilisation peut engendrer.
