Homophones a constraint against accented epistrophe ...
Wagner, Michael. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: We test whether a homophone antecedent can cause deaccentuation of a word, even though its meaning is not salient in the discourse. If yes, this provides evidence for a phonological constraint against accented epistrophe (in addition to constraints that require constituents encoding salient information to be deaccented). If a word is deaccented for this reason alone, however, without its meaning being given, the sentence will sound a bit odd, since we predict that deaccented information must be given, even if deaccented for phonological reasons. We tested these predictions in a prior experiment, but the materials had some confounds, and we want to replicate the effects here. ...
