Abstract:
(i) 喜界島北部方言は,7つの母音(i, ɪ, u, a, e, ë, o)を,南部方言は5つの母音(i, u, a, e, o)を持っている。 ; Kikaijima dialects belong to the Amami dialect group, which was designated as an endangered language by UNESCO. We investigated these dialects in 2010. In this paper, we report on the vowel features of Kikaijima dialects based on the data we collected. We can summarize as follows. (i) Northern Kikaijima dialects have seven vowels (i, ɪ, u, a, e, ë, o), and southern Kikaijima dialects have five vowels (i, u, a, e, o). This result is almost the same as what was reported forty years ago. (ii) However, [ɪ] appears after [n] even in southern Kikaijima dialects. This suggests that the vowel shift advanced at different speeds depending on the preceding consonant.
