Abstract:
mainly examined how Korean learners ' perception and production of the /ɛ / and /æ / sounds are changed during their learning. The theoretical framework was mainly grounded in Flege's (1995) Speech Learning Model (SLM), claiming that L2 phonological categories for new sounds become established as L2 experience increases. For the perception test, nine native Korean-speaking subjects, assigned into the inexperienced and experienced group based on their length of residence in the U. S. (0.7 vs. 8 years), participated in a perceptual similarity rating test. The results revealed that the English /ɛ / is perceptually similar or identical to Korean /ɛ / for both groups, whereas the English /æ / was perceived as a different sound at higher percentage for the experienced group than the inexperienced group. For the production test, the experienced subjects produced more accurately than the inexperienced group for the both sounds (86 % vs. 47 % for the /æ/, 47 % vs. 42 % for the /ɛ/). The most important findings of this study were that L2 experience influenced the perception of the L2 vowels differently and the perceptual difference has an influence on the production of the English /ɛ / and /æ/.
