Abstract:
This thesis aims to study the French and Chinese causative lexicon using contrastive and functional approaches. More precisely, it has a dual objective. First, it consists in examining the characteristics and function of causative morpho-syntactic means in French and in Chinese. Secondly, it aims to compare these means on the syntactic, semantic and discursive levels. To do this, the study is based on the Scale of compactness, developed by the Australian typologist Dixon (2000). This scale classifies, according to morpho-syntactic criteria, causative mechanisms in languages from the most compact to the least compact: causative verbs (Eng: to walk, to melt; Fr: causer, provoquer); causative morphemes (Eng: to lie / lay; Fr: simplifier, moderniser); the complex predicate (faire + Vinf) and the less grammaticalized causative periphrastic construction (Eng: to make somebody cry; Fr: forcer qqn à + Vinf). This classification of causative mechanisms constitutes an effective filter for the study of causality in languages. We applied it to the analysis of the function of French causative mechanisms in comparison with Chinese.From a methodological point of view, this research, centered on both quantitative and qualitative analyzes, is based on two parallel French-Chinese corpus. These are the institutional UN corpus and the literary corpus Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland (1866-1944). In addition, the parallel corpus allows to establish ranges of functional and translational equivalents between the compared languages. In order to verify the Chinese equivalents of the French causative lexicon, a monolingual control corpus, composed of journalistic texts, was used. This operation allows to confirm and / or to invalidate the results obtained in the two parallel corpus. On the other hand, the various textual genre of the corpus offers examples of different language contexts.Following our linguistic analyzes, 5 types of Chinese equivalent of the French causative lexicon were identified. They are, from the most compact to the least compact, causative lexical verbs (造成 zàochéng, to cause, to provoke; 导致 dǎozhì, to lead to); causative morphological verbs suffixed in 化 huà (简化 jiǎnhuà, simple + huà, to simplify); the construction “light verb + V2 / adj.” (加大 jiā dà, add + large, to enlarge); the causative periphrastic construction “causative V1 + V2” (使 shǐ, to make / 让 rang, to let + V2) and of the complex phrasal restructuring (“Métataxe”, Tesnière, 1959). ; Cette thèse vise à étudier le lexique causatif français et chinois dans une perspective contrastive et fonctionnelle. Plus précisément, elle a un double objectif. Primo, elle examine les caractéristiques et le fonctionnement des moyens morpho-syntaxiques d’expression de la causalité en français et en chinois. Secundo, elle a pour but de comparer ces moyens sur les plans syntaxique, sémantique et discursif. Pour ce faire, cette étude se base sur l’Échelle de compacité (Scale of compactness), élaborée par le typologue australien Dixon (2000). Cette échelle classe, selon les critères morpho-syntaxiques, les mécanismes causatifs dans les langues du plus compact au moins compact : les verbes causatifs (ang : walk, melt ; fr : causer, provoquer) ; les morphèmes causatifs (ang : lie/lay ; fr : simplifier, moderniser) ; le prédicat complexe (faire + Vinf) et la construction périphrastique causative moins grammaticalisées (ang : make somebody cry ; fr : forcer qqn à + Vinf). Ce classement des mécanismes causatifs constitue un filtre efficace pour l’étude de la causalité dans les langues. Nous avons appliqué cette échelle à l’analyse du fonctionnement des mécanismes causatifs français en comparaison avec le chinois.Du point de vue méthodologique, cette recherche, centrée sur des analyses à la fois quantitatives et qualitatives, s’appuie sur deux corpus parallèles français-chinois. Il s’agit du corpus institutionnel de l’ONU et du corpus littéraire Jean-Christophe de Romain Rolland (1866-1944). Par ailleurs, le corpus parallèle permet d’établir des éventails des équivalents fonctionnels et traductionnels entre les langues comparées. Afin de vérifier les équivalents chinois du lexique causatif français, un corpus monolingue chinois de contrôle, composé de textes journalistiques, a été employé. Cette opération permet de vérifier les résultats obtenus dans les des deux principaux corpus de travail. D’autre part, la diversité de genre textuel des corpus offre des exemples de différents contextes langagiers.Suite à nos analyses linguistiques, cinq types d’équivalents chinois du lexique causatif français ont été identifiés. Il s’agit, du plus compact au moins compact, des verbes lexicaux causatifs (造成 zàochéng, causer, provoquer ; 导致 dǎozhì, conduire à) ; des verbes morphologiques causatifs suffixés en 化 huà (简化 jiǎnhuà, simple + huà, simplifier) ; de la construction « V support de causation + V2/ adj. » (加大 jiā dà, ajouter + grand, agrandir) ; de la construction périphrastique causative « V1 causatif + V2 » (使 shǐ, faire en sorte que / 让 ràng, laisser + V2) et de la restructuration phrastique complexe (« Métataxe », Tesnière, 1959).
