Favour asking in Modern Greek: A sociolinguistic analysis ...
Harissi, Maria. - : Selected papers on theoretical and applied linguistics, 2005
Abstract: The present study investigates the extent to which the linguistic realization of a particular speech act, defined as favour asking, varies among female and male speakers of Modern Greek (henceforth MG). The theoretical framework utilised is that of 'politeness' and 'face'. Detailed analysis of 240 tokens of elicited actual favours indicates that women and men are equally influenced in their choices of linguistic features for the favour request by the factor of intimacy with their interlocutor. Further, although the sex of the interlocutor seems to be a significant factor for both populations, women tend to consider it of higher importance. Finally, the two sexes do not seem to differ significantly as regards their use of the linguistic features instantiated in the favour request. ... : Selected papers on theoretical and applied linguistics, Vol 16 (2005): Selected Papers on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics from the 16th International Symposium, Thessaloniki 11-13 April 2003 ...
