竹富島『星砂の話』の絵本制作と一般読者向け文法概要の執筆
Abstract:
; We describe the procedure of making a picture book, A Tale of Star Sand, in Taketomi Dialect, which is spoken in Taketomi Island, Yaeyama, Okinawa, Japan, and of writing a grammar sketch for a general audience about this dialect. Taketomi Dialect (teedun+muni “Taketomi+speech”) belongs to the Ryukyuan languages, Yaeyaman, and is only spoken by elderly people over the age of 70. It is one of the endangered languages of Ryukyuan. We first give an overview of the “Port Language Revitalization Project,” to which this picture book project belongs, and explain why we linguists made a picture book (and other contents such as badges and stamps) with other professionals and local people. We then document the procedure of writing a grammar sketch for a general audience of the picture book in order for them to understand the book in Taketomi Dialect. The grammar sketch includes the writing system and pronunciation, case, topic, and focus particles, the paradigms of verbs and adjectives, and sentence final particles. We addressed ourselves not only with respect to clarity, but also regarding questions that non-linguists tend to come up with (e.g., which is “correct,” X or Y?). The grammar sketch avoided exhaustiveness, which academic grammar sketches tend to focus on, and aimed at explaining the expressions in the picture book, the advantages and disadvantages of which are to be discussed shortly. Finally, we include the grammar sketch and text in the picture book. We hope that our paper will help similar contents to be developed for other endangered languages in the future.
