... : Research has already pointed out that the fabrication of maps was crucially linked to border conflicts in Early Modern Europe. This paper presents a case study of this interrelation using the example of an early 17th-century quarrel between the Duke of Lorraine and the Elector of Trier over the condominium of Merzig-Saargau. While the Duke sought a clear-cut division of the condominium in his favor, the Elector was more interested in maintaining the status quo. An examination of the map produced during the conflict and of the written communication between Nancy and Trier reveals several misunderstandings and different views about administration and the resolution of conflicts. As this case study illustrates, bilingual intermediaries as well as written communication and the depiction of maps were constitutive in constructing evidence within politically ambiguous spaces. ...
