Abstract:
International audience ; What makes it understandable that a series of expressions such as "Barack Obama . the former president of the United States . Michele's husband . he" refers to the same person? By what linguistic and cognitive mechanisms do we manage to link these expressions? What makes it possible to apprehend, follow and memorize the main topic of a written or oral speech? How do we introduce a referent into a text? With what grammatical and lexical tools can we "trace" it to form a well-formed, cohesive and coherent text? These are the questions that this book intends to answer by tackling the question of chains of reference, which define the sequences of expressions referring to the same entity. It is thus at the crossroads of the fields of reference, cohesion, textual coherence and thus of the so-called trans-/inter-phrastic or textual linguistics. The first two chapters deal with the foundations of chains of reference, i.e. the anaphora and co-reference relations and the parameters that facilitate their apprehension (identification and order of references, measures characterizing the density and unity of chains, etc.). The third chapter questions the linguistic material making up the links of the reference chains through the theoretical models that have dominated the field for nearly thirty years. The fourth and fifth chapters expose the external and internal constraints influencing the composition/interpretation of the reference chains (diachronic and diametrical variations, textuality, discursive genres, .). The last chapter proposes a very concrete "practical application" in various disciplinary fields ranging from literature to the didactics of French through clinical linguistics and automatic language processing.
