Abstract: The paper describes longitudinal spontaneous and experimental cross-sectional production data from Portuguese children on the acquisition of irregular plural forms of words with final lateral. A contrast between the early acquisition of regular plural forms and the late acquisition of the focused structures was attested. The results provide empirical evidence for the discussion on (i) the contributions of different types of data for phonological assessment, (ii) the acquisition of the target phonological processes and (iii) the role of the phonology / morphology interface in the nature of children’s lexical representations.
