Integrating aggregational and probabilistic approaches to dialectology and language variation ; Die Integration aggregativer und probabilistischer Zugänge zur Dialektologie und Sprachvariation

Abstract:
I integrate two hitherto disjunct research methodologies: the aggregational approach to language variation as exemplified by dialectometry, and the probabilistic view of language as exemplified by the modeling of language variation, customarily utilized by variationist sociolinguists and probabilistic grammarians. Building on Szmrecsanyi's Corpus-based Dialectometry, I develop two new sets of methods. One is based on probabilistic modeling, the other on data-driven permutational analyses. I apply these methods to the dialect corpus FRED (Freiburg Corpus of English Dialects), and evaluate claims regarding the shape of the dialect landscape of Britain.
