Integrating Database, Expert System, and Hypermedia: the Shakespeare CD-ROM Project

Abstract:
The Shakespeare Database Project is preparing a self-contained CD-ROM product as an integrated information system of the complete works. The system will provide a new research environment for Shakespearians and linguists interested in early modern English. The design stresses an integration of editorial, linguistic, and theatrical information. The underlying database has more than fifteen entities and more than eighty attributes. Cardinality values range between 2,500 and 1 million records Electronic facsimile pages of early Quarto and Folio printings are accessible via play (act scene, line, speech prefix) and word (lemma, wordform, morpheme) references. Hypertext browsing is supported through various ‘traditional’ entry points textual collation and editing, vocabulary, and grammar. Navigational advice is available at all points.
