Abstract:
Das Asylverfahren als eigenständiges Dolmetschsetting kann DolmetscherInnen vor eine Reihe von Herausforderungen verschiedenster Natur stellen. Es kennzeichnet sich vor allem durch die vorherrschende Asymmetrie, die verwendete Fachsprachlichkeit und die differenten Anforderungen der Beteiligten an die DolmetscherInnen. Zudem repräsentieren die Gesprächssteuerung und -koordination, die Überbrückung kultureller und sprachlicher Unter-schiede zwischen den Parteien, das Wahren der Unparteilichkeit und des eigenen face nach Brown & Levinson (1978/1987) und die wiederkehrende Emotionalität während der Einvernahme eine mögliche Hürde beim Dolmetschen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die her-ausfordernden Aspekte des Dolmetschens im Asylverfahren aus Sicht der DolmetscherInnen zu erforschen und diese den soeben beschriebenen theoretisch erfassten Herausforderungen gegenüberzustellen. Dadurch wird aufgezeigt, inwiefern die in der herangezogenen Literatur erwähnten Aspekte von den DolmetscherInnen thematisiert und welche zusätzlichen Schwierigkeiten in diesem Setting von ihnen aufgegriffen werden. Außerdem wird untersucht, inwieweit Ausbildungsgrad und Berufserfahrung im Zusammenhang mit der Identifizierung der Herausforderungen durch die DolmetscherInnen eine Rolle spielen. Um die Forschungsfragen zu beantworten, wurde eine qualitative Studie, welche sich der Methodik des Sampling und des leitfadengestützten Interviews bediente, durchgeführt. Mithilfe der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Kuckartz (2018) wurden die Interviewtranskripte analysiert und in Hinblick auf die Forschungsfragen ausgewertet. Ausgehend von den Ergebnissen manifestiert sich, dass die bereits aufgeschlüsselten Herausforderungen auch von den DolmetscherInnen erläutert, jedoch abhängig von Ausbildungsgrad und Berufserfahrung dieser teilweise von den theoretisch erfassten Herausforderungen differieren. Zudem beschreiben die Befragten beispielsweise die Sitzkonstellation vor Ort, den ausgeüb-ten Zeitdruck und den Mangel an Vorbereitungsmaterial als herausfordernd und ergänzen, dass auch sie Anforderungen insbesondere hinsichtlich der Sensibilisierung der anderen Gesprächsparteien in Hinblick auf ihre Rolle und Tätigkeit haben. ; Asylum hearings as settings for interpretation are primarily characterized by prevailing power asymmetries, the official jargon used, and the different parties’ demands on the interpreter. Nevertheless, interpreters also face many other challenges, including controlling and co-ordinating the questioning, bridging cultural and linguistic barriers between the participants, maintaining impartiality, protecting one’s face according to Brown & Levinson (1978/1987), and handling the emotions that emerge during the hearing. This master’s thesis empirically examines the challenges in this setting from the interpreters’ perspective and compares them to those named by the sources consulted. In this respect, it explains the extent to which the challenges discussed by interpreters overlap with those described in the literature, and identifies additional aspects which practitioners consider onerous. Furthermore, this thesis examines the degree to which the interpreters’ training and professional experience play a role when identifying those challenges. In order to answer the research questions, a qualitative study was carried out using sampling and guideline-supported interviews. According to Kuckartz’s (2018) qualitative content analysis, the interviews were analyzed and evaluated with respect to the research questions. The results confirm that interpreters describe the same challenges discussed above, but they also show that their descriptions differ in accordance with the individual’s state of training and professional experience. Moreover, the interviewees also identify additional challenges that interpreters face in the context of asylum proceedings, including the seating arrangement on site, the time pressure put on them or the lack of preparation material, and explain that they, too, have certain expectations of the other participants, especial-ly concerning their awareness of the interpreter’s role and work in asylum proceedings.
