Abstract:
International audience ; In the introduction to The Electric Banana, William S. Burroughs describes the volume as “a unique auditory experience approaching the actual found sound of language” (Beach 2017, 11) in its myriad manifestations, highlighting the performative quality and essence of a text whose fragments are built on an organic dialectics between words and sounds, language and soundscape. One would have expected that this oralityof the text generated its oral performance in the form of public reading or readings of sorts. But to date or knowledge there exists only one performance of Beach’s cut-up experiments, stored at the McCormick Library and reproduced and commented by E. Robinson on Studio Reality. Close listening to the extracts and their comparison with the published texts offer numerous avenues to explore and raise a series of questions which this paper tackles. ; Dans l’introduction à The Electric Banana, William S. Burroughs qualifie le volume d’ “expérience auditive unique proche du vrai son trouvé du langage" dans ses multiples manifestations, soulignant ainsi la qualité performative d’un texte dont les fragments s’organisent autour d’une dialectique organique entre les mots et les sons, le langage et l’espace sonore. On aurait pensé qu’une telle oralité du texte se traduise par des performances publiques du texte. Mais il semble n’exister qu’une seule lecture de ces cut-ups par Mary Beach, archivé à la McCormick Library et reproduit et commenté par E. Robinson sur le site Reality Studio. Une explication de voix de ces extraits conjointement à leur explication de texte offre quantités de pistes de travail que cette communication vise à faire émerger.
