Abstract:
Diese Forschungsarbeit untersucht die Verbreitung der deutschen Sprache sowie die historische Entwicklung der Germanistik in Indien und inwiefern diese von globalpolitischen Ereignissen, sozio-ökonomischen Beziehungen und von kulturellen Phänomenen geprägt und nachhaltig beeinflusst wird, beispielsweise in den Schlüsseljahren 1914, 1939, 1947 und 1989. Auf Grund des Wandels der Sprachvermittlung, der durch multiple Faktoren, wie politische Strömungen und Persönlichkeiten, beeinflusst wurde, kann der Deutschunterricht in Indien in sechs Phasen untergliedert werden. Jede Periode ist durch markante Charakteristika definiert und eine Vielzahl dieser hat Auswirkungen bis in die gegenwärtigen Curricula der Sprachinstitutionen und Universitäten, wie etwa die Entwicklung der Landeskunde/Cultural Studies. Die Geschichte der Lehrendenausbildung sowie das zur Verfügung stehende Lehrmaterial spielt ebenfalls eine zentrale Rolle und bietet Anlass zur Reflexion und Analyse der gegenwärtigen Situation. Durch diese zentralen Thesen als auch die Kategorisierung der Phasen kann eine Bestandsaufnahme erfolgen, welche eine gezielte wie auch vielfältige Unterstützung der deutsch-indischen Beziehungen sowie der indischen Germanistik bezweckt. Die Forschung stützt sich vor allem auf gedruckte Quellen aus indischen Universitäts-, College- und Stadtarchiven, wobei die Sekundärliteratur aus Bibliotheken im deutschsprachigen Raum bezogen wurde, unter anderem aus dem Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IfA), der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek und der Universitätsbibliothek Wien. Ein Ziel dieser Arbeit ist das Potential von Fremdsprachenunterricht generell, hinsichtlich der aktuell eher nationalistisch geprägten Entwicklungen auf dem indischen Bildungssektor, zu betonen. Hierbei soll keinesfalls die Hinwendung zu den 22 indischen Nationalsprachen in Frage gestellt werden, sondern vielmehr der Akzent auf Mehrsprachigkeit gelegt werden. Auch im ohnehin schon bestehenden „Mehrsprachigkeitsparadies Indien“ dürfen außerindische Fremdsprachen den Stellenwert im Schulunterricht nicht verlieren. ; This research investigates the establishment and spread of Ger-man language in India, as well as the development of the departments of German studies in Indian states, with a focus on the central and western states, such as New Delhi and Maharashtra. The research ex-amines the importance of historical events, socio-economic relations, global-political trends, and cultural phenomena which characterize the different phases of the German language in India, in particular the key years 1914, 1939, 1947 or 1989. Language transmission was influenced by multiple factors such as inner-political changes and historical personalities. Hence, German teaching can be categorized in six phases. Each of these periods is defined by special characteristics that only occur in the particular phase and therefore make it unique and distinguishable from the oth-ers. In present German studies, the impact of these characteristics can be proved, therefore making it easier to analyze the present according to these variables from previous periods. This can be observed espe-cially in the field of German studies / cultural studies in the German speaking world. Moreover the history of German teacher training and teaching materials will take a central part in this research as they provide a basis for reflection and analysis for the current situation and how it can be improved. Resulting from the analysis, we propose an approach on how Indian-German relations could be created and improved. The research is based on printed sources obtained from Indian universities, colleges and city archives, while secondary literature was mostly provided by libraries in German speaking areas such as the Institute of Foreign Affairs (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, IfA), the Austrian National Library (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, ÖNB) and the library at the University of Vienna. One goal of this research is to emphasize the potential of teaching foreign languages in regards to the current slightly nationalistic trend in the Indian educational sector. While discussing these current politi-cal changes, the importance of the 22 official Indian languages should not be questioned. On the contrary, the aim of the research is to initi-ate a concept of an even wider field of multilingualism than is current-ly practiced in India. Outer Indian Languages as well as Indian lan-guages should be integrated in current school curricula and Indian society in general in order to further multilingualism in India.
