Precisiones para una caracterización lingüística de la neología semántica ; Clarifications for a linguistic characterisation of semantic neology
In: ELUA, 34, 2020, págs. 73-94 (2021)
; When considering the form in which a neologism is manifested, researchers distinguish between formal neology or neology of form and meaning, based on the creation of a new signifier or a new signifier and signified, and semantic neology or neology of meaning, which implies the presence of a new meaning or acception for an existing signifier. In this article, we analyse semantic neology and, more specifically, the nature or character of the new meaning or acception that this entails. We intend to show that lexical, categorial and syntactic or structural meanings, defined within the framework of European linguistic structuralism, must be taken into account when establishing a typology of semantic neologisms. This article will contribute to the differentiation between the subtypes of semantic neologisms that are usually enumerated and the inclusion in this semantic neology of some creation procedures that have not yet been dealt with or systematically included in formal neology.
