Abstract:
; The present thesis analyzes positioning practices of the portrayal of the battle of Aleppo within Austrian newspapers using the theory of heteroglossia. Within the theoretical section the concept of heteroglossia is introduced, and furthermore, its use is specified. The foundation of the present thesis lies within studies on positioning theory from Du Bois (2007) and Spitzmüller (2013b), and more specifically on research on positioning within narratives following Bamberg (1997) and Wortham (2001). It also incorporates insights from previous studies on stylistics, such as Spitzmüller (2013c) and Günthner (1997), and additionally places a strong emphasis on the incorporation of the metapragmatic markers “hedges” and “boosters” (Zienkowski 2014). Within the empirical section the present thesis analyzes 60 articles portraying the battle of Aleppo published by Austrian newspapers from the years 2012, 2014/2015, and 2016. Using “a multi-layered model of analysis (DIMEAN)“ (Spitzmüller & Warnke 2008: 3), the aim of this section is to analyze heteroglossic overlapping between authors and the portrayed actors within the articles. In summary the present thesis shows, that heteroglossic overlapping between authors and the portrayed actors within the articles can be found in all analyzed Austrian newspapers. All the heteroglossic overlapping can be noted as practices of positioning.
