Faire « local » avec un accent étranger : entre inclusion et minorisation

Abstract:
L’étude à la base de cet article montre que, dans le contexte de la diversité croissante de la population suisse, des ressources langagières relevant de la variation régionale commencent à signifier de nouvelles frontières de type ethno-national. Ce changement indexical consiste à exclure de la signification sociale d’une variante locale le trait d’ethnicité majoritaire lorsqu’elle côtoie des marques d’accent étranger, ce qui annule la plus-value que les personnes migrantes pourraient retirer de l’usage de variantes locales. Ce résultat démontre un paradoxe : l’appropriation par des personnes issues de l’immigration des ressources langagières qui permettent une intégration sociale ne contribue pas à réduire leur minorisation. ; The study on which this article is based shows that, in the context of the growing diversity of the Swiss population, linguistic resources related to regional variation are beginning to signify new ethno-national boundaries. This indexical change consists in excluding from the social meaning of a local variant the trait of majority ethnicity when alongside with foreign accent features, which cancels out the added value that migrant people might derive from the use of local variants. This result points to a paradox: the appropriation of linguistic resources by people with a migrant background that allow for social integration does not contribute to reducing their minorization.
