; The development of the present participle and verbal noun in the history of English and Scots is a highly complex issue, with the diverse factors being at play. The present diploma thesis includes a detailed study of the syntactic characteristics and frequency distributions of these forms in the period of Middle Scots, which was carried out by means of an electronic text corpus (The Helsinki Corpus of Older Scots).
