Abstract:
EnIn the 17th century, some of the greatest powers of the Old World – France and England above all – struggled for dominance of North America and commercial supremacy over the Atlantic. The model of colonization used by the Europeans to administer their North American possessions was largely different from that used in Central, South America and the Caribbean. The colonial projects of France and England, in particular, were based on the creation of a cohesive territory in which the cultural, religious, political and linguistic traits of the mother country were clearly recognizable. This vision led to the application, with different degrees of success, of policies of territorialization. The aim was to transform colonial possessions into a veritable extension of the central States, supplanting the political and social organization of the native tribes and rival powers: the desired economic and commercial primacy would be achieved through the supremacy of their social and cultural model.
