Education for Girls and Women in the Syrian Arab Republic ...

Abstract: The purpose of this ethnographic study was to learn about education for girls and women in Syria. There is in the west a stereotype of Arab women as undereducated and without rights. This view of Muslim women ignores national differences, changes in the status of women, differences within the country, and often confuses religion and culture. The research questions were as follows. What are the educational opportunities for women and girls in Syria? How have the opportunities changed? Finally, how have women benefited from the changes in educational opportunities? I saw evidence of vast increases in opportunity for women since 1946. There were also educational reforms since Bashar al-Asad became President in 2000. For eight weeks, I lived in a town outside of Damascus during May, June and July of 2006. I observed and participated in daily family and other social routines. Here, I focused on women's points of view and their stories of educational experiences and successes or failures.
