Abstract:
El model labovià de variació lingüística parteix d’una premissa fonamental segons la qual la variació és un fet lingüístic significatiu. Aquest article tracta de fonamentar aquesta afirmació i constatar, al mateix temps, que sense la proposta als anys setanta del nou paradigma de sociolingüística quantitativa de Labov, no només no hi hauria «cap mena de tradició de recerca lingüística empírica dins la comunitat de parla» (Trudgill, 1996 [1994]: 15), sinó que molt possiblement aquest paradigma, conegut des de la seva consolidació com a teoria del canvi lingüístic i la variació, no hauria arrelat en la historiografia lingüística internacional. Per damunt de tot, Labov ha estat el defensor d’una nova forma d’observar, analitzar i descriure el llenguatge —aquesta capacitat humana que fa humans els éssers vius— i també el promotor de la integració de la variació dins d’una teoria del canvi lingüístic. Finalment, aquest article considera aquest model retrospectivament, i també a partir de la contribució, durant el darrer terç del segle xx i la primera dècada del segle xxi, de la recerca variacionista en llengua catalana al model labovià i a la lingüística teòrica i descriptiva generals.Paraules clau: variació lingüística, canvi lingüístic, sociolingüística quantitativa, model labovià, recerca variacionista, català. ; The Labovian linguistic variation model is founded on the basic premise that variation is a significant linguistic fact. This article aims to support this assertion while at the same time demonstrating that without Labov’s new paradigm of quantitative sociolinguistics in the 1970s, not only would there not be “any sort of tradition of empirical linguistics research within the speech community” (Trudgill, 1996 [1994]: 15), but very likely this paradigm, which came to be widely known as language change and variation theory, would never have taken root in international linguistic historiography. Above all else, Labov advocated a new approach to the observation, analysis and description of language—the specific human ability that makes living beings human—and promoted the incorporation of variation into a theory of linguistic change. Finally, this paper explores Labov’s model retrospectively, as well as the manner inwhich the Catalan variationist research of the last three decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century has contributed to the Labovian model and to theoretical and descriptive linguistics in general.Key words: language variation, linguistic change, quantitative sociolinguistics, Labovian model, variationist research, Catalan.
