Digital XML-based editing: the case of Bess of Hardwick's letters
Abstract:
This essay discusses the online edition of the letters of Bess of Hardwick, which brings together 241 extant letters, from the 1550s to the 1600s. In addition to collecting letters dispersed over 19 separate archives, the web-edition allows several features that would be difficult or impossible in print: colour images of 185 letters, for instance, or the ability to flexibly re-sort letters according to various criteria (date, recipient, content, etc.) This essay explores these and other features of online editions, arguing for the advantages (and discussing some of the problems) of publishing in this form.
