It was a time when this approach was beginning to re-establish itself after half a century, in German sociology in particular but also at the international level. Sociological biographical research began in the 1920s, in association with the migration study The Polish Peasant in Europe and America by William Isaac Thomas and Florian Znaniecki (1918–20; 1958) at the University of Chicago. Even then, empirical work was already concentrating on the single case study. Alongside documentary analysis on the migration process, this voluminous work contains only one biography of a Polish migrant, commissioned by the researchers. It was not so much the concrete biographical analysis that made this work so influential for subsequent interpretative sociology and biographical research, but rather the two authors' general methodological comments. ; Der Beitrag zur Grundlagenforschung entwickelt ein theoretisch-phänomenologisches Konzept zur dialektischen Interrelation zwischen Erfahrung, Erinnerung und Erzählung und diskutiert diese Unterscheidung als maßgeblichen Bestandteil bei jeder erzählten oder geschriebenen Biographie. So werden im ersten Schritt zunächst die Grundannahmen des biographisch-theoretischen Ansatzes beschrieben. Auf dieser Grundlage werden im zweiten Schritt sodann die beiden Sequenzen des biographisch-narrativen Interviews dargestellt, und zwar (1) die Periode der Haupterzählung zwischen dem Interviewer und dem Interviewten sowie (2) die Periode des Fragens, gegliedert in internale bzw. externale narrative Fragen. Der dritte Schritt befasst sich schließlich mit den biographischen Fallrekonstruktionen und verdeutlicht dieses wissenschaftliche Instrumentarium anhand eines Beispiels, der Lebensgeschichte der 1968 in Sibirien geborenen Galina und ihrer Familie. Dabei wird wie folgt vorgegangen: (1) Analyse der biographischen Daten, (2) Text- und thematische Feldanalyse, (3) Rekonstruktion der Lebensgeschichte, (4) Mikroanalyse der individuellen Textsegmente, (5) kontrastiver Vergleich der Lebenshistorie und der Lebensgeschichte sowie (6) die Entwicklung bzw. Herausarbeitung von Typen und der kontrastive Vergleich von verschiedenen Fallstudien. In einer abschließenden Zusammenfassung merkt die Autorin an, dass der hier vorgestellte methodologische Ansatz der biographischen Forschung seine Daten durch eine narrative Weise der Konversation gewinnt. Durch diese Herangehensweise rücken die Perspektive der Interviewten und damit die subjektive Relevanz in den Mittelpunkt, was im nächsten Schritt den Sozialforschern die schriftliche Rekonstruktion vergangener Erfahrungen ermöglicht.
